Can ChatGPT Analyze a Patent Portfolio?

Four limits cap the pasted workflow, and each one is a property of how the data arrives before the model ever sees it.

A full portfolio outruns even a million tokens once the claims, specifications, office actions, and correspondence across every family enter the count. Someone has to choose a subset before the model reads a word, so the questions that span the whole portfolio never reach the prompt. A model that reads a chosen subset can compare the documents inside that subset. It cannot rank the families it never saw.

A paste is also an export, dated the moment it leaves the docketing system. Office actions arrive and continuation windows move while the copied text stays exactly as it was. Analysis of an aging export answers questions about the portfolio as it stood on the export date.

The quoted language in a model's output needs a verification pass of its own. The AI Hallucination Cases database maintained by legal researcher Damien Charlotin has logged 1,963 court decisions involving fabricated material from AI tools as of late August 2026, including 528 decisions involving false quotes. Claim language raises the stakes on a fabricated quotation. Counsel who work from a pasted excerpt verify every quoted phrase by hand against the source document, and that verification time comes out of the analysis itself.

Docket awareness never enters the chat at all. ChatGPT answers the question asked about the text in front of it, unaware of the annuity due next month or the continuation window closing on the family it just summarized. Larger context windows arrive every release cycle and leave the other three limits standing.

What changes when the AI is connected to live portfolio data?
