Patent Portfolio Reporting: Answer "What Is It Worth?" Without the Midnight Spreadsheet

When the general counsel asks what the patent portfolio is actually worth, most in-house teams answer with a spreadsheet they rebuilt by hand the night before. The question is fair. Intangible assets now make up roughly 90% of the market value of the S&P 500, so the person asking is right to treat the portfolio as something that shows up on the balance sheet, not a cost center that files paperwork (Ocean Tomo). The hard part is answering it, which right now often means exporting from the docketing system and stitching the numbers together by hand, again, the way you did last quarter.

That manual rebuild is the quiet tax on a lot of IP teams. Legacy reporting means pulling data into a spreadsheet and reconstructing the same views every cycle, because the system holding the data was built to track it, not to answer questions about it. So the reporting is always a little stale, always a little bespoke, and always dependent on whoever knows how to assemble it. When the GC asks a follow up the export did not anticipate, you are back in the spreadsheet.

ArcPrime treats reporting as something you ask for directly. You describe what you want in plain language, and you get back tables and charts you can act on. There is no ticket to a BI team and no waiting for a new view. If the GC wants patent renewals by business unit, filings by inventor, or assets mapped to a product line, you ask and see the answer, then follow it wherever the next question leads.

The reports you run over and over do not have to be rebuilt each time. You save the analyses you rely on, so the quarterly numbers are one click instead of one evening, and you pull the ones that matter into dashboards your team watches over time. A saved report becomes a living view, not a snapshot you email and lose. When the board deck comes due, the metrics are already there and current.

This is also where the portfolio starts speaking the language the business uses. ArcPrime supports board and GC reporting with the portfolio mapped to revenue, which turns a patent count into a number a general counsel can carry into a leadership meeting. The value of the portfolio becomes something you show, tied to the products and revenue it protects.

None of this is reserved for the biggest departments. A team that just moved off a spreadsheet needs to answer the value question as much as a department running tens of thousands of assets, and often has less time to do it. Flat pricing with no per seat fees means the whole team can be in the system feeding the same reports, whatever its size.

The GC will keep asking what the portfolio is worth, and the honest answer deserves better than a spreadsheet assembled at midnight. To see your own numbers answer that question on demand, book a conversation.
